What Is This Facebook Metaverse?
Have you guys heard that Facebook is changing its name?? TO META?!
So what are we supposed to do? Say, “hey add me on Meta??”
No, calm down. The Facebook app that you are used to, will keep its name.
But the parent company Facebook, that owns Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger is what’s changing to Meta.
So what does this mean for all the apps it owns that you use to market your business?
Why is Zuckerberg making this change? What does meta mean?
We’re tackling these questions about Facebook Metaverse and more in this post.
Let’s go ahead and dive in!
What Happened To Facebook?
In October of this year, the parent company Facebook…
…was rebranded to Meta – which comes from the word Metaverse.
Mark Zuckerberg said,
“Right now, our brand is so tightly linked to one product that it can’t possibly represent everything that we’re doing today, let alone in the future.
Over time, I hope that we are seen as a Metaverse company, and I want to anchor our work and identity on what we’re building toward.”
So this begs the question…
What Is Facebook Metaverse?
Investopedia says,
“The Metaverse is a digital reality that combines aspects of social media, online gaming, augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR)…
…and cryptocurrencies to allow users to interact virtually.”
Now some of you may be like okay great… so what is it?
Let us just show you.
Essentially you put on a pair of glasses and are instantly transported into another world.
These are clips Facebook released to show examples of:
- Horizon Home
- Horizon Worlds
- Horizon Workrooms
Zuckerberg said,
“In this future, you will be able to teleport instantly as a hologram to be at the office…
…without a commute, at a concert with friends, or in your parents’ living room to catch up.”
Why Is Facebook Doing This?
So why are they changing their parent company name for this?
We’ve mentioned Zuckerberg’s reasoning earlier, that it was to better represent everything they’re doing today and “be seen as a Metaverse company.”
But let’s look at a few other factors that are possibly at play here.
Even if you don’t pay attention to the news that much…
…you’ve probably heard that Facebook and Zuckerberg have been in hot water a lot over the last couple of years.
This includes the recent news with Facebook whistleblower Frances Haugen saying Facebook prioritizes growth and profit over user safety.
So some argue that this conveniently-timed rebrand is all a part of Facebook’s plan to magically start fresh…
…and just sweep all their bad press and scandals under the rug.
Others say it’s “about owning the operating system of the future.”
We all know Facebook has a history of copying features from other platforms and then slowly dominating the space to where the original source is booted out.
Snapchat Stories led to Instagram Stories.
Vine led to Instagram video.
TikToks led to Instagram Reels and so on.
So we’re not surprised to hear that Facebook is trying to preemptively dominate this space.
And speaking of Instagram Stories, check out this post next to learn more about Instagram Stories for business.
One person said, “They don’t want to be prisoner on other people’s platform. They want others to be prisoner on their platform.”
And another said, “I doubt that they would relinquish anything that might compromise their position as the definitive advertisement provider of the Metaverse.”
So as you can see, there are already some strong opinions about this rebrand. And that doesn’t even include the general public’s opinion.
We mean, look at some of the comments on the video Facebook released about Metaverse.
“I’m excited to walk through a flower field of ADS on my daily commute.”
“This world is starting to look more terrifying than sci-fi horror movies.”
“If kids nowadays struggle to communicate their feelings, I’m terrified how Metaverse will effect them.”
And the list goes on.
Now the last thing we want to talk about is how these changes will affect your current online marketing with Facebook and Instagram.

How Facebook Metaverse Will Impact Your Marketing
Lastly, you probably want to know, how would this change impact your marketing efforts on the Facebook and Instagram platforms?
Zuckerberg said in his video announcing Meta that “our apps and our brands, they’re not changing either.”
So you may not see a direct change with your existing social media marketing campaign right away.
But, you can definitely count on a wave of new marketing opportunities to appear within the Metaverse.
Search Engine Journal said, “The Metaverse is poised for rapid growth that will open up opportunities for marketers.”
And according to Investopedia, “Zuckerberg believes augmented reality glasses will eventually be as widespread as smartphones.”
It means that this new technology is expected to be adopted quickly by the masses.
Zuckerberg also said,
“If you’re in the Metaverse every day, then you’ll need digital clothes, digital tools, and different experiences.
Facebook’s goal is to help the Metaverse reach a billion people and hundreds of billions of dollars of digital commerce this decade.”
So as a business owner marketing your brand, you’ll want to keep your eye on this technology as it develops.
And this is because if the public embraces this new way of leveraging the internet to integrate it with everyday life, you’re going to want to be there.
You already do it with social media ads.
So think of Facebook Metaverse as potentially being the new social media in the way of putting your brand in front of a targeted audience for cheap.
We thought one article made a valid point worth noting which was that the younger generations are already somewhat used to the idea of all of this.
They spend billions of dollars every year on games like Fortnite to change their “character skins” aka their character’s digital outfit within the game.
So if you’re a brand looking to survive the future and stay relevant, today’s younger generation are tomorrow’s adults.
And if they’re already making purchases for a virtual world now…
…that’s likely to increase drastically the more commonplace the Facebook Metaverse becomes.
